Quotes
The Alchemist says, “When a person really desires something, all
the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream (114)”. This
quote helps explain one of the underlying themes of The Alchemist which is dreams. A dream is a goal we imagine and hope that one day will occur. However, if we pay no mind to our dreams and set out to make them happen the universe will no longer cue us toward our path of reaching that goal and making our dream come true. The universe does conspire to help Santiago find his treasure but along the way it tests his ability to persevere and not give up. This quote paraphrases the journey of a young shepherd who gives up everything in order to go after his dream. It shows that dreams can be so easy to grasp yet so difficult to discover. In Santiago’s case, his treasure was right at home but it was more valuable than before because of all the treasures he discovered on the path toward it.
“If what one finds is made of pure matter, it will never spoil. And one can always come back. If what you had found was only a moment of light, like the explosion of a star, you would find nothing on your return (123)”. Even though this quote refers to love it could also refer to Santiago’s treasure because he came back for it after a long journey and it was still there, unspoiled. This quote is important in the novel because it shows how the power of love and desire can transcend from an abstract form to that of pure matter like gold. Also, it applies to the values Santiago has learned along the way such as: being true to oneself and not being afraid of taking risks. The quote simply states that what you learn in life must be enjoyed and appreciated because if it is “put-up” with just to get ahead in life it will be useless and you will have not learned anything from your experience.
The Alchemist says, “It’s the point at which, as we say in the
language of the desert, one dies of thirst just when the palm trees have
appeared on the horizon (132)”. This quote is of great importance to the novel
because it shows that no matter how impossible something may seem to be, it is
always worth the struggle to see the final result. Had Santiago given up and
ignored his dream, he would have not found Fatima or his treasure. Also, even
though the journey towards his treasure had many downfalls it also had many
unforgettable experiences from which Santiago could reflect on and incorporate
onto his path of self-discovery. This quote serves to prove that even though
Santiago lost everything he had, got his money stolen, and made a “pointless”
trip to the pyramids, he received more than what he sacrificed to make his dream
come true because he persevered to see the palm trees after years of trying to
find his way around the desert.
